TRIP and West Country artist, Mattko (Matthew Smith) are proud to present Full On. Non-Stop. All Over - a photography book capturing Human Rave Behaviour between 2000-2005.

At the turn of the millennium and after a decade of dedicating his life to producing free party community and culture, photographer Matthew Smith decided that it was time for a change.

Working out of Bristol; Matt travelled the length and breadth of the country, capturing events of every genre and culture and the results are an intimate snapshot of UK club culture; unknowingly sat wide-eyed on the verge of the digital age.

Star Potential is a collaboration between image-maker and lecturer, Dean Davies and students of UWE, Bristol’s BA(Hons) Fashion Communication programme.

Captured over a 3-year period, the project explores how co-creation can enrich teaching and learning, providing students with opportunity and experience in working alongside an industry-positioned practitioner in the development of their practice.

Creating fashion image with Davies as photographer and film-maker and students as stylists and casting directors, each of the project’s 19 photo-shoots were built from the ground-up. Mirroring industry practice, students were invited to pitch their ideas and attended a series of tutorials with Davies to develop their styling and casting further, culminating in a styling fitting and final amendments prior to the photo-shoots.

The visuals of Star Potential see models captured against residential backdrops in Bristol, juxtaposing fashion with familiar public settings. Each student’s unique perspective on fashion takes centre stage through the styling and casting depicted - an extension of work they develop throughout their time on the programme, exploring topics such as; queerness, gender nonconformity and kitsch, and including contemporary and nostalgic references to style trends; from punks and cowboys to early 2000s pop stars.

The curated outfits include garments from grandparent’s wardrobes, upcycled items sourced from charity shops, and styling assembled on the day for the purpose of the photo-shoot.

Family members, friends and street-cast models feature throughout.

In the dead of winter, Bulgarians around the city of Pernik dress up in monstrously beautiful costumes made of goat-hair and run from house to house to banish evil spirits. This is kukeri, one of Europe’s last folk traditions which remains untouched by outside influence.

Enchanted by these elaborate costumes, photographer Theo Cottle travelled to Bulgaria, only to find that the main festival had been cancelled due to drought. Undaunted, he visited practitioners, called kuker, at their homes, and found they were proud to share their unique tradition with him, getting their costumes out of storage and donning them for a series of intimate, joyous portraits.

A collaboration between image-makers, Dean Davies and Vicky Olschak, Manchester Girls is part reality, part fiction – a homage to the strong women that informed Dean and Vicky’s adolescence. The series and its publication draw upon some of the less documented female perspectives within Manchester’s rich working class heritage, embodying the youthful mischief and everyday mundanity of life in Manchester’s suburban sprawl.
